Speaking Specifically in a Multireligious Conversation with Science

28 November

We are deeply honoured to welcome Revd Dr Greg Cootsona, California State University, USA, to lead a session of the Science and Religion in Interfaith Contexts Reading Group.

Abstract

In my work in science and religion—for example, through the Science, Technology, and Religion program unit of the American Academy of Religion and in writing Science and Religions in America: A New Look —I’ve negotiated my identity as a Christian with a commitment to engaging with other religious traditions. This builds from earlier work that drew on Michael Welker’s “polycontextual and multiperspectivally adjusted” approach to the world. It also represents what I consider a third wave in religious studies—away from a triumphalist approach that often characterized 19th century thought, and from a 20th century relativist method represented by influential voices like Huston Smith and Mircea Eliade, and to a cultural-linguistic framework represented by thinkers such as George Lindbeck and Stephen Prothero. In that light, I’ve endeavored to bring my specific religious language, context, and perspective into an interchange with others in an interreligious dialogue with science. I will conclude this talk with a few key implications of this approach.
